Furniture restoration: from “meh” to amazing!
One of the best things about thrift stores is finding that diamond in the rough. When avid thrifter Debbie was shopping at our Forest Lake Thrift Store, she found a lovely bench with good bones. Looking past the 1980s blue velour, she knew she’d have a winner with a little TLC.
“First, I gave it a good cleaning. It was wobbly, so I took it all apart and re-glued the peg fittings,” Debbie said.
She then recovered the seat with some fabric that she already had on hand. After that, she was ready to work on restoring the wood.
“I restored the wood with a product that is new to me, and I was blown away by the results. Instead of days spent stripping and/or sanding, I spent 30 minutes two different evenings to get these amazing results,” Debbie said. She had tried two products by Howard — Restor-A-Finish and Feed-N-Wax, both available at many local hardware stores.
And the results speak for themselves! Debbie hopes seeing how easy it is to bring a piece back to life will encourage others to find their own diamonds. “I would love for other thrifters to see how easy it can be to restore a piece of furniture and to reimagine the potential of each piece.”
