Maddie's Story

Maddie’s husband died suddenly, leaving her a single parent of two beautiful little girls ages three and six. She worked part-time but her wages alone didn’t cover everything a small family needs including mortgage payments, utilities, gas, clothing, and food.

One day, Maddie’s 6-year-old daughter, Anna, was riding to school with a neighbor when she clutched her stomach and said her tummy hurt. The neighbor asked if she had been sick and she quietly said “no”. Anna then told her neighbor that she was so very hungry and that’s why her tummy hurt. She said, “If we had just had a piece of bread even…”

The neighbor told Maddie about the Family Pathways Food Shelf. Initially Maddie was hesitant to visit the Food Shelf, but that changed when she heard Anna’s story about the piece of bread.

Today Maddie visits the Food Shelf weekly and is especially grateful for the holiday food items. “For my children, I want to keep the holiday traditions we had when my husband was alive,” Maddie explains. “But groceries are super expensive. Thankfully I can find what I need at the Food Shelf and we can all focus on healing and the future.”
